Why Visitors Leave Your Website! 8 Annoying Features You Need To Fix

If your website is not generating leads for you - you have a problem.  You may need a website audit to find out why. In the meantime, here are a few annoying website features that can cause visitors to leave your site fast - mostly in frustration.

Lack of Message

Have you ever landed on a site and for your life couldn't figure out what they do? When someone lands on your site you have approximately 7 seconds to capture their attention.  They are going to do a quick scan and if it's not immediately clear what your business or service is - they will click away to a competitor. You need to immediately answer their question, "are you qualified to help me with my problem?"  Whatever you do or sell - make it clear!

No Contact Info

If you are a local business, you want someone to call right? Make your phone number very visible in one or more places on your home page  - preferably in a button with tap to call.  Placing your phone number in the footer of your website is also a good idea. The point is to make it easy for a visitor to call!

If you’re a brick and mortar store be sure you have a map with directions visible. If people need to fill out a contact form just be sure it's easily seen.

Too Much Animation

Too much can be a distraction as everything that moves is vying for a visitors attention. Moving slides header, videos that auto play, intrusive live chat or chat bots that pop up, animated ads - these just annoy visitors. Sometimes the live chat bots, while intended to be helpful, can be close to the creepy line. Keeps these kinds of elements to a minimum.


Sites that load slow are a bummer. Many people are just too impatient to wait for sites to load. Some things that can slow a site are server issues, lots of extra large images, enormous amounts of (junk) code in the background and too many plugins.  Have your site speed checked and use a cache plugin if needed.

Poor Design and Layout

Is your website easy to navigate? Is it clear what the next steps are after landing? Is checkout easy? Nothing frustrates a visitor more than to try to figure out where to go or what to click to find what they are looking for.  Keep your home page clean and uncluttered making it easy for a first time visitor to navigate.  When your layout is confusing people will click away to a competitor.

Not Responsive

Having a responsive website is crucial. A responsive website will re-size itself to the display device and have a different format for smaller screens. Google announced recently that its now showing mobile friendly sites first before regular versions, so if your website is not responsive it will be difficult for it to show on ipads and smart phones. Regular sites just look smaller and the text is hard to read if its not responsive. Get this taken care of immediately with a brand new website if needed.

Thin Content and Tiny Text

Just having images and little content won't satisfy your visitors or search engines. People are searching for information and you should provide it. Content should clearly explain who you are, what you do and how you can help solve their problem.  Making the text a good readable size is important as many visitors use their phones when searching.

Unattractive or Dated Look

Customers tend to click away from sites that have a dated look and feel. If your website is over 4 years old it may be time for a site makeover. Popular website trends are clean designs with easy navigation and simple layouts with information separated in easy to read segments.

Look over your site and fix or remove these annoying features. Having an attractive site with clarity of message, easy contact info and good informative content will help you keep visitors on your site longer and convert into more sales.
